Re-framing “the learner” in the climate crisis. Setting the scene for the PRME Regional Chapter UK and Ireland 7th Annual Conference.

As a lead-up to the 2021 PRME Regional Chapter conference hosted by the University of Lincoln, we held a preparatory workshop. The results of this workshop fed directly into the conference agenda on this year’s theme of “Crises and the Re-Thinking of Responsibility: Advancing pedagogy; challenges and opportunities.”
Our Guest is Keri Facer, Professor of Educational and Social Futures, School of Education, University of Bristol, and recently Zennström Professor of Climate Change Leadership at Uppsala University. She is the author of the Higher Education Policy Institute Debate Paper 24 (2020) “Beyond Business as Usual: Higher Education in the Era of climate change”.
Her presentation considered how universities need to take a leadership role in putting the world on a more sustainable footing and how this might be reflected in framing what we mean by ‘the learner’ – an often taken-for-granted construction which has considerable influence on what we teach and how we teach it. Her presentation was followed by an open Q&A session with the audience. The conclusions from this workshop informed further debate on the pedagogy theme of the full conference.

Keynote Speaker | Dr. Mary Johnstone-Louis
Saïd Business School, University of Oxford | B Lab UK
Speaking within conference theme 2: Partnerships With Purpose; Breaking Boundaries
Programme Director of the Ownership Project and a Senior Research Fellow at Saïd Business School, University of Oxford. She is Head Tutor for Oxford’s Leading Sustainable Corporations Programme and has worked on five continents including fieldwork in Bangladesh, South Africa, and across Latin America. She is a World Economic Forum Global Futures Council Fellow and Chair of the Board of B Lab UK.

Keynote Speaker | Ray Dhirani
Speaking within conference theme 3: Creating A Vision Of Socially And Environmentally Responsible Management
Ray studied Business and Finance at The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania before working as a banker at Merrill Lynch. He then undertook an MSc in Environment and Development at LSE and started to work for the WWF nine years ago. Ray’s work focuses on sustainable investment, and metrics, policy and regulatory work on climate and environment.
Keynote Speaker | Lord Victor Adebowale
Victor is a non-Executive Director of the Co-Operative Group, Collaborate CIC, Nuffield Health, Visionable and Leadership in Mind. He is also Chair of Social Enterprise UK and the NHS Confederation. After 19 years, Victor has recently stepped down as the CEO of Turning Point, a social enterprise providing health and social care interventions to approximately 100,000 people on an annual basis. Victor also served for six years as a Non-Executive Director on the board of NHS England. He has chaired a number of commission reports into policing; employment; mental health; housing and fairness for The London Fairness Commission; the Metropolitan Police; and for central and local government. He was awarded a CBE for services to the unemployed and homeless people and became a crossbench peer in 2001.
Victor is a visiting Professor and Chancellor at the University of Lincoln; an honorary member of the Institute of Psychiatry; President of The International Association of Philosophy and Psychiatry and a Governor at The London School of Economics.
Victor has an MA in Advanced Organisational Consulting from Tavistock Institute and City University.
